Setup guide.

From download to your first page in a few minutes.

  1. Install on macOS

Open the DMG and drag Keydown to Applications. The beta is not yet notarised by Apple: if macOS says it cannot verify Keydown, open System Settings › Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway.

  2. Install on Linux

Keep the AppImage somewhere you own, such as ~/Applications, so Keydown can update it in place, then make it executable:

    chmod +x Keydown-x86_64.AppImage
  3. Open a project

Any folder can be a project. Point Keydown at existing Markdown or Fountain files, or start fresh and add a Binder to give the manuscript its order.

  4. Connect an assistant (optional)

Use Claude Code, Codex, or any MCP client with your own subscription. How to connect →

  5. Stay up to date

Keydown checks for updates when it opens and every few hours, downloads them in the background, and asks before it restarts.

  6. Sync, when you want it

Keydown Sync is on its way. Until then, a project is just a folder: keep it in git, iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or any backup you already trust.
